What to Expect During Each Trimester of Pregnancy

First Trimester

Second Trimester

The 2nd trimester spans from the 13th week to 27th week of the mother’s pregnancy. During this period, the pregnant spouse may feel less nauseated. The bump in the abdomen will be more evident by now and she may even feel the growing baby’s movements.

One of the changes that the male spouse should note is that his partner’s body experiences muscle pains in the abdomen, lower back, and thigh. He should be eager to relieve the soreness by gentle massages on these aching areas. Stretch marks and dark skin will also appear in many parts of her body, particularly in the abdomen, breasts, and thighs.

Due to the mother’s increase in size, she will need loose maternity clothes. As her husband, be careful to choose clothes that will allow her free movement. The 2nd trimester will also trigger frequent urination, so the expectant mother must always be assisted in going to and fro the toilet.

Third Trimester

As the end of the 2nd trimester approaches, muscle contractions in the pelvic area will be felt. At the start of week 28 until the end the pregnancy period, most of the symptoms felt will be in preparation for the baby’s delivery.

Because of the baby’s increase in size, the mother will experience difficulties in breathing, so the male spouse should be quick to assist her in more comfortable positions. The frequent urge to urinate will still continue.

Swelling and tenderness in the breasts will also be evident. Be careful to cheer the mother to looking forward to breastfeeding her infant soon.

As the due date of delivery approaches, painful contractions will be sensed. Make sure that you are always ready to assist the expectant mother as the contractions could be signs of pre-labor. Gentle massages on the feet, ankles, lower back, and shoulders will help ease and relax her.
