Importance of woman’s thoughts/emotions during pregnancy
Recent scientific studies have been able to establish the fact that there’s more to a bond between a mother and her unborn child than a mere physical connection. Truly, it has always been a subject of speculation and research for generations of mankind. In fact, recent findings point towards the existence of an advanced emotional and spiritual association between a pregnant mother and her baby, which is far beyond their obvious physical interaction.
Maternal emotions shape the fetal mind
Normally, by six months of gestation, a fetus develops the senses of feeling, smelling, tasting, and hearing. This means a baby acquires the ability to feel the environment around it, even when it is still inside the mother’s womb. It is believed that maternal emotions have the ability to influence how a baby feels.
According to Dr. Thomas R. Verny, a psychiatrist and the founder of The Association for Pre- and Perinatal Psychology and Health (APPPAH), “Everything the pregnant mother feels and thinks is communicated through neurohormones to her unborn child, just as surely as are alcohol and nicotine”. A mother’s thoughts are considered to be the initial sources of her emotions, and these emotions, in turn, become precursors to a number of hormones which have the ability to cross the placenta and affect the brain functions of the fetus.
It is believed that negative maternal emotions inflict negative effects on the fetal brain while positive and happy emotions result in positive impressions. These emotions are automatically stored within the subconscious mind of the baby only to resurface at some point or another in his/her life as various behavioral traits and psychological characteristics.
A pregnant mother can be under a lot of stress all through her pregnancy due to various reasons like health concerns, inability to cope with the daunting physical changes, being in a toxic relationship with the partner, and so on. These stressful conditions can have a significant impact on fetal brain development. “When passing through the placenta, the hormones of a mother experiencing chronic stress will profoundly alter the distribution of blood flow in her fetus and change the character of her developing child’s physiology”, says Bruce Lipton, an expert neuroscientist, and cell biologist.
According to Dr. Verny, “Mothers under extreme and constant stress are more likely to have babies who are premature, lower than average in weight, hyperactive, irritable, and colicky”. These babies later grow into adults with high susceptibility to depression and low tolerance to stressful conditions. On contrary, babies growing in a positive and happy fetal environment have a higher predisposition to acquire strong and healthy personality traits in the future.
Maintaining positive and healthy emotions during pregnancy
It is no brainer; good vibes are a must in a pregnancy. The more you indulge in positive emotions, the happier your baby becomes. So, what can you do to feel happy all the time? Practice happy thoughts every day. Spend some time thinking about things which can make you happy. Do things that make you happy. Listen to some soothing music. Read a good book. Do some meditation. Basically, do anything safe that can lift your mood up.
Most importantly, if your partner is pregnant with your child, make sure to keep her contented all the time. Never be an extra burden to her. Don’t be abusive. Always ensure she is happy and well taken care of.
